Laparoscopic Surgery

Laparoscopic surgery is also known as keyhole surgery or minimally invasive surgery (MIS), and is often performed as an alternative to ‘open surgery’.

Laparoscopic surgery involves making a number of small incisions in the abdomen, and using a laparoscope (a thin telescope with a light source) which is used to light up and magnify the structures inside the abdomen. In addition to the laparscope (which can see inside the abdomen), surgeons can then use specialist surgical instruments to operate laparoscopically. Laparoscopic surgery can be used for a number of procedures.

This surgery is performed using a general anaesthetic.

There is a wide variety of Laparoscopic surgical procedures available, across a number of specialties.
